slotnoot: Eveneens op 8 aug. seinde Hirschfeld onder no 359 aan Minuor: 'Ik verzond heden aan de UNCI-voorzitter de volgende brief: "I have the honour to confirm this morning's conversation, during which I informed you of the serious disturbances and fighting which have broken out in Macassar since Saturday August 6th, between Netherlands troops and Indonesian armed forces. For your information I enclose herewith a translation into English of a letter which I addressed today to His Excellency the Prime Minister of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia concerning these grave developments. I take leave to confirm the request which I had the honour to address to your commission on behalf of the Netherlands Government, that the United Nations Commission for Indonesia should urgently consider what steps it can take to prevent the continuance of the present hostilities and to ensure a peaceful solution of the conflict." Bijlage Engelse vertaling van mijn brief aan Hatta conform tekst geseind in telegram 356.' T.a.p. De volgende dag seinde Hirschfeld met 'spoed' onder no 361dat Doolittle hem had medegedeeld 'dat de UNCI besloten heeft milexboard, bestaande uit 5 hoogste UNCI-militairen, zo snel mogelijk naar Makassar te zenden teneinde daar alle medewerking te verlenen voor een vredelievende oplossing. De UNCI', aldus vervolgens Hirschfeld, 'heeft Hatta hiermede ook in kennis gesteld, die tegen vertrek van milexboard naar Makassar geen bezwaar had. Ik heb hedenmorgen mijnerzijds aangeboden eventueel een Catalina beschikbaar te stellen. De UNCI achtte het beter de Garuda te gebruiken. Op verzoek van de UNCI heeft Cochran Laoh uit de Ministerraad gehaald om te trachten de Garuda vrij te krijgen. Het vertrek zal zo spoedig mogelijk plaatsvinden. Ik heb Doolittle tevens mijn laatste informaties gegeven.' T.a.p. Blijkens tel. no Hirschfeld 375 had de UNCI op 9 aug. in een brief aan Hirschfeld vastgelegd, dat zij 'had decided tot instruct its senior military advisers to proceed to Makassar as soon as possible, unless an unforeseen change in circumstances makes their visit unnecessary, in order to seek information on the spot, contact both parties involved and put their services at parties' disposal and to report their findings to the commission. The commission also decided to inform Hatta of Your Excellency's request that the commission should consider urgently what steps it can take to prevent continuance of the present hostilities and to ensure peaceful solution of the conflict and of the commission's intention to send its military advisers to Makassar'.
