Op 29 mei had U Thant bij open telegram het volgende aan minister-president De Quay geseind: 'I am most grateful to your Excellency for responding to my appeal to resume negotiations on the basis of the Bunker proposals. I would now urgently appeal to your Excellency to order the immediate ending of all hostilities in West New Guinea so that the negotiations on the future of the territory on the basis of the Bunker proposals may take place under the most favourable conditions. I sincerely hope that, in view of the excellent chances for a peaceful settlement of the problem, this appeal wil be heeded.
