Repertorium van Nederlandse zendings- en missie-archieven 1800-1960

Het archief werd door Ton Kappelhof bezocht op 20-23 april 2009. Toen het archief moest worden overgebracht van het woonhuis van de directeur, dat gesloopt zou worden, is de oorspronkelijke orde vernietigd. Enige stukken waar Brandl naar verwijst en die ik niet kon vinden zijn tijdens de verhuizing verloren gegaan. De archiefbeheerder mevr. Schultheis ordende het archief opnieuw. In de archiefruimte is een lijst beschikbaar.Veel stukken zijn brieven van zendelingen aan Neukirchen of het Comité in Utrecht. Stukken over de ziekenhuizen opgericht door de zendelingen stammen voornamelijk uit de twintigste eeuw. Het schijnt dat de zendelingen geen etnogrsafisch onderzoek hebben gedaan in dit zendingsgebied geen etnografisch onderzoek hebben gedaan; in Kenya deden zij wel onderzoek naar plaatselijke talen. Vanaf ongeveer 1900 zijn de meeste stukken getypt, oudere brieven zijn in handschrift, ten dele in het toen in Duitsland in gebruik zijnde handschrift dat sterk afwijkt van het moderne. de stukken zijn gedeeltelijk in het Duits, gedeeltelijk in het Nederlands, terwijl enkele stukken van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog in het Maleis zijn. Het zendingshuis heeft een rijke verzameling van Duitse zendingstijdschriften, maar de Rheinische Missionsgesellschaft in Wuppertal-Barmen heeft een meer volledige collectie. Het archief bezit ook een fotokopie van het Protokolbuch van het Utrechtse Comité met de notulen, de jaarverslagen van de zendelingen en andere stukken die belangrijk werden geacht. Volgens Brandl zijn bijna alle stukken geschreven door of over Louis Doll verloren genaan (uit: voordracht gehouden door Brandl tijdens de 150ste geboortedag van Doll in 1992).

The archive was visited by Ton Kappelhof on 20-23 April 2009. When it had to be brought over to the mission house from the director's home, which was to be demolished, the original order was destroyed. Some documents Brandl refers to and that I could not find were lost during the removal. The archive keeper, Mrs. Schultheis, arranged the archive again. There is a list available in the archive room. Many records are letters from the missionaries to Neukirchen or the Committee in Utrecht. Records about the hospitals erected by the missionaries mainly date from the twentieth century. It seems the missionaries did not conduct ethnographical research in this mission area; in Kenya they did do research into the local languages.

From about 1900 most documents are in typoscript, earlier letters are handwritten, partly in the handwriting that was in use in Germany in that period and which differs strongly from modern handwriting. The records are partly written in German, partly in Dutch, while some documents dating from after the Second World War are in Malay. The mission house in Neukirchen has also a rich collection of German missionary journals. The archive also possesses a photocopy of the

of the Utrecht Committee containing the minutes, annual reports from the missionaries and other documents considered important. According to Brandl almost all documents written by or about the founder Louis Doll are lost (from: speech held by Brandl at the commemoration of Doll's 150th birthday in 1992).

Minutes of the conferences of the Bund and of the conferences of the sisters 1929-1940

These conferences were held three times a year. Although Brandl is referring to older reports from 1884 onwards, these appeared not to be present any more when I visited the archive in April 2009. The list of the records made up in 1997 does not contain these reports either. The reports from the Africa missionary work ((Tanzania and Kenya) also used by Brandl and according to his list of used sources covering the period 1893-1914 could not be found either. The Mission- und Heidenbote gives short summaries of the conferences.
